Explore DC Photography

For our first visual literacy project, we took pictures of various locations in the washington DC area from different vantage points (from above, from the water, and in motion), so as to discover how different angles can affect the way we read images visually.

Advertisment Analysis

-This ad uses contrast in color in that the text of the ad and the ribbon on the product are brightly colored and are thereby contrasted with the neutral colors of in the rest of the image (i.e. the model’s black dress, the white background, and the champagne-colored perfume. This is an affective tool in conveying the message of the ad in that these bright colors draw the viewers attention to the most import elements of the ad: the brand and the product itself.

-The ad uses line to convey a certain mood in that the model is lying horizontally, indicating a comfortable relaxed state of mind. This successfully illustrates the message of ad in that it suggests the product is to be associated with comfort and relaxation and thereby gives the product a positive association in viewers’ minds.

-Finally, the ad incorporates texture to make the image more dynamic. From the image, we can see the texture of both the model’s dress and the perfume bottle itself. Particularly in the case of the perfume bottle, this tool is highly affective because it makes the product seem three-dimensional, almost like we could reach out and grab it, which naturally makes us want it all the more.

Photo Essay Assignment

As a part of our Visual Literacy class, we completed a photo essay assignment in which we were asked to photograph and compile a set of photos to exemplify the notion of a particular abstract noun. Our group focused on demonstrating the idea of "trust" in our photography.

After creating a rough version of our photo essay, we found that the best way to convey this notion of trust through our photography was to develop a clear story of initial trust, betrayal, and an eventual rebuilding of trust.

Final Project: Smithsonian

For our final project for Visual Literacy, I worked with a team of fellow students to create promotional materials for an event called the "National Youth Summit" sponsored by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. To promote the summit, which was aimed at educating high school student about the "freedom summer" in Mississippi, we created several videos as well as posters, buttons, and t-shirts.

My role in the project was in the area of social media and creating actual promotional materials. I worked on recording the audio for the interviews in the videos, helped make the images for the posters and the buttons, developed the facebook page, and printed the t-shirts.

During the actual presentation of the materials we created, I helped to showcase the facebook page as well as the posters, t-shirts, and buttons.

Ultimately, it was an extremely rewarding experience that illustrated to me the amount of work necessary to effectively advertise an event. However, if I could do it all again, I would begin production on the promotional materials (the posters, buttons, and t-shirts) much earlier so that we wouldn't be so pressed for time.
